I wish…

There was a way to blog and reorganize my office at the same time.
Since I should work on the office, I will leave you with this cartoon.  The fun haikus will give you a glimpse into the mind of a child.

And just in case it cannot be read you can find it here.  Since we [...]

Telling it like it is.

My daughter is very good at this, and it started when she was quite young.
Turning the clock back 7 years now to a summer when she was only 3 years old:
“Beppy,” as she fondly called herself back then, was born with a need for speed.  She loved to fly down the sidewalk on one of two [...]

And the words of the day are…

1. Disrespectment: Something disrespectful that causes embarrassment to another party. Example: According to my daughter “making fun of the president in a video game is disrespectment.”
2. Combinated: When a combination is combined. Example: According to my son “they were combinated to make the ultimate defense” (I’m sure he’s referring to a video game.)
3. Paradimensionalalienaphobia: This [...]

I was under the impression…

That I was in charge.  I was mistaken.
One of my students was asked by her parent “Is Mrs. V in charge?”  My student’s response was “No!”  So the mom asked who was in charge, and the little girl replied “Mrs. K.”  Mrs. K is my faithful sidekick and amazing assistant teacher.
Ouch, that stung the ego a little.
However, [...]

Classroom Conversations

This is what I will miss the most when summer break begins, the conversations my students have with each other. A couple of examples for your enjoyment:
Conversation #1:
Boy A: “Come look at my guns!”
This of course catches my attention, since we don’t allow gun play at preschool. (A topic for another day.) So when I [...]

X-rays don’t talk

I bet you knew that though.  Apparently I didn’t.
Here’s the evidence:
Scene and characters:  Wednesday morning, art table, child with broken collar bone, obviously blonde teacher
Child: Teacher, I had to get another x-ray.
Me: Oh, really?
Child:  They took a picture and put it on the computer.
Me:  Wow!  What did the x-ray tell the doctors?
Child:  Nothing.
Another Child:  Teacher, [...]

It must be in the timing

A joke overheard in my preschool classroom:
Girl A:  Why did the daddy rescue the princess from the dragon?
Girl B:  I don’t know.
Girl A:  Because the dragon had a new tooth!
This is followed by a joyous round of laughter by the other children listening, because it’s obviously the funniest joke out there.  So, I decide to [...]

Eat a little? Eat a lot?

Several times throughout the school year we provide a lesson about healthy eating.  It was part of the lesson plans again last week, when we were talking about dental health.  I pass out picture cards with different foods (healthy foods and treats) and the students take turns coming up and putting them in the correct [...]

So, where do you work?

A couple of weeks ago we had our much anticipated field trip to the public library.  As we’re riding on the bus and talking about the library and the librarian, and that her job is to take care of the books at the library, one of my students pointed out where his/her daddy works.  This [...]

Do you know…

How to eat a rainbow?  This is a question I asked my preschoolers the other day because we are talking about, you guessed it, rainbows.  We went through each color and my little friends told me about the fruits and vegetables that fit into each color.
For example: red for tomatoes, cherries, strawberries and peppers, orange for oranges, clementines and [...]
