How many?

29 Oct

We carved pumpkins at preschool today. Before we did, I asked my students how many seeds they thought were inside the pumpkin that was set to be turned into a jack o’lantern. I wrote the numbers down on a pumpkin shaped piece of orange paper.

Some of the answers: 3, 10, 68, 118, 100, 20, 1000, 1,000,000, etc…

The best answer: One million-billion-trillion. Last year I had a child who’s answer was “infinity.”

The actual (at least as close to actual as I could get) numbers: 272 for the morning, 309 for the afternoon. We counted by tens. It is just easier that way.

Kids and pumpkin guts: Totally grossed most of them out, but their little disgusted faces were hysterical.

They were fascinated with the whole pumpkin carving process, and even the children who had seen it done before enjoyed it.

For art we painted with orange paint using orange strings (tied to clips), and used fingerprints in beige for seeds. The pictures were on yellow paper and had a very close resemblance to pumpkin guts.  We’re going to put them up on a bulletin board, because they are really terrific pictures.

I love pumpkin carving day.

Thanks Google Images for the awesome pumpkin guts picture!

How many times can I type “pumpkin guts” in one post?

Now you’ll just have to tell us how many searches you get on the term “pumpkin guts.” 🙂

We just read a book that was about estimating – it had lots of pictures of stuff to guess how many of each.. for instance, jelly beans, paper clips, shoes, penguins, etc.. it was cool.

I don’t even want to think about pumpkin guts (ick. hate the thought), but yes, we’ll have to do that soon!

    Cheers – to pumpkin guts!

Can I go back to Pre-K? Your class sounds like so much fun!
I have one daughter who hates pumpkin guts and won’t even watch us remove the guts. The other one gets right on in there right up to her elbows!

RC: no searches yet, I’m kind of disappointed.

    Little Old Me: LOL

Daisy: I love preschool estimation. 😀

Just a Mom: You are welcome anytime. The guts gross out my son, but my daughter loves it!

This is a fun activity. We had a big pumpkin and a small one and tried to guess when would have more seeds. We also tried to guess if they would float – that was really fun and surprising to most of the kids and especially my assistant.

Little kids and pumpkin guts are so funny… When Josh was that age he took one look into the pumpkin and decided that pumpkin carving was not for him. *lol* … He’ll carve them now though. 😀
